Official Entries to the MMFF 2016

Yesterday, the official entries to the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival was announced. Noticeably missing from the list are movies starring Vic Sotto, Vice Ganda, and Regal Entertainment produced films. We compiled the details and teaser trailers so you don't have to.

Die Beautiful by Jun Robles Lana

Starring Paolo Ballesteros, Joel Torre, Gladys Reyes, Luis Alandy

Trisha, a Filipino transgender woman, suddenly dies while being crowned in a beauty pageant. Her last wish was to be presented as a different celebrity on each night of her wake, but her conservative family wants to bury her as a man. Trisha's friends are left with no choice but to steal her body and hold the wake in a secret location. And as Trisha is transformed to look like different celebrities, they also look back at the colorful and extraordinary life that she has led - being a son, a sister, a mother, a friend, a lover, a wife, and ultimately, a queen.

Vince & Kath & James by Ted Boborol

Starring Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia, Ronnie Alonte

Remember those screenshots of text messages about the love story between a varsity player and a beauty queen that went viral last year? Yep. They made it into a movie.

Sunday Beauty Queen by Baby Ruth Villarama

Starring Hazel Perdid, Maylyn Jacobo, Cherry Bretania and Leo Selomenio

A documentary film which follows a group of foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong as they prepare to take part in an annual beauty pageant.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2: Forever is Not Enough by Marlon Rivera

Starring Eugene Domingo and Chris Martinez

Eugene Domingo is excited by the project but she has other ideas in mind. In the film-within-the-film, we see Eugene’s absurd suggestions and recommendations -- changing Rainier’s script by employing the poetics of the Pinoy romantic comedy genre into what is supposedly a realistic portrayal of love and marriage.

Saving Sally by Avid Liongoren

Starring Rhian Ramos and Enzo Marcos

Marty is an aspiring comic-book artist who is secretly in love with his best friend, Sally, the gadget inventor. Like every love story, there are complications: Sally has monsters for parents and a literal dick for a boyfriend, while Marty has the innate ability to do nothing about everything despite his vivid fantasies of defending the love of his life from the big bad world.

Trailer #1

Trailer #2

Unfortunately, I can't find much info or teaser trailers for the following films:
  • "Kabisera" directed by Arturo San Agustin and Real Florido; starring Nora Aunor, Ricky Davao, JC De Vera, Jason Abalos, Victor Neri and Rj Agustin
  • "Seklusyon" directed by Erik Matti; starring Rhed Bustamante, Phoebe Walker, Elora Espano, Neil Ryan Sese, Ronnie Alonte, Lou Veloso, Dominique Roque, John Vic De Guzman and JR Versales
  • "Oro" directed by Alvin Yapan; starring Joem Bascon
They all look promising. I am particularly interested in "Die Beautiful" and "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank", but after seeing the trailers of "Saving Sally", I want to see it too. What about you? What has caught your interest?
