GameOPS P.O.I.: Graceson

After watching a movie, have you ever wondered who wrote the theme song? Or sometimes, hearing that really catchy song they play in the background, you can't help but smile and say, "Wow, I love this song!"

Well, our GameOPS P.O.I. this time, is a musician and composer from Newcastle, England -- the very talented Graceson!

Graceson is the newest talent produced by Chris Cahilig, the manager and producer of the popular Filipino boyband 1:43 as well as the indie film Echorsis. Graceson's song "Have You Ever?" is one of the theme songs that will be used on an upcoming movie called "Miss Q and A: Para Sa Magaganda Lang Ba Ang Love Life?" starring Kakai Bautista and Zoren Legaspi.

Could you tell us something about yourself?

I'm a musician from Newcastle, England and I'm currently living in Manila, Philippines.

Graceson is your artist name, right? So we were wondering, why did you choose the name Graceson?

I wanted to perform under a pseudonym and I'm a huge Batman fan, so I wanted it to relate to Batman in some way. Dick Grayson was the first Robin and the first NightWing, so I decided on Grayson. I saw some people had used Grayson already so I changed it to Grace. Grace is my favourite album by Jeff Buckley.

When we visited your Facebook page, and we noticed the "#thelostmusician" hash tag in your Facebook header. We are very curious to know the story behind it. Would you mind sharing it to us?

#Thelostmusician came from travelling as I've lived in many different places but never really felt at home anywhere, lost in a way. Guess I'm still waiting to be #thefoundmusician.

Can you please talk us through your creative process?

I usually start with lyrics and then play around on the guitar to match up a melody and chord structure to match the lyrics.

What genre of music are your compositions?

I would personally say it's alternative acoustic music, but music now is constantly changing and becoming more difficult to give a genre to. The next single I'll release could be picked up by a DJ, remixed and then work in a club scenario. So its difficult to tie music down to one genre these days.

What is the hardest part of composing?

For me, I usually writing the lyrics based around real life experiences, so constantly writing things about my personal life can become difficult if there isn't much going on. So lately I have began writing more fictional lyrics, which also comes with its own difficulties.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration is from women or relationships or real life experiences.

Do you sing or play any instruments?

I sing and I play guitar, I've played bass in the past and drums in a band too, but I'm wouldn't say I'm a drummer, I can keep time and that's about all.

How long have you been composing songs?

I think I composed my first song about 14 years ago.

When did you realize you wanted to become a composer and/or create songs?

I began writing when my dad gave me a Bob Dylan song book, it had about 500 songs in it and I was struggling to write one. That book and when my dad gave me the Apple Collection of The Beatles. It opened me up to new sounds and things that were different to what I was listening to at the time.

How was your talent discovered?

When I was young I was attending voice and acting classes from an early age. That was when I started to sing and perform live.

What type of music do you listen to? What are your favorite genre of music?

I can't really say my favorite genre, because it depends on my mood but I would say I listen to Indie, Post-Rock, Alternative, Metal, Math Rock, Acoustic, Jazz. But I still have a soft spot for the crooner age like Nat King Cole and disco like earth wind and fire.

We heard that you're currently composing a song for an upcoming movie. Can you tell us about it?

I had written the song before called "Have You Ever?" before I knew about the movie titled "Miss Q and A". It's actually one of my first fictional songs, not necessarily based on any experience or relationship. I sent the song to film and music producer Chris Cahilig and the song fit for a specific part of the movie and we began working on it so it could be used as one of the official soundtracks.

How old are you? Are you still single? And would you be willing to date?

I'm 28 and I'm single and I am willing to date anyone, but I know what I like and I know what I want in a woman.

Aside from music, what else are you into?

TV and Movies mainly. I studied acting and directing in university so I would love to do more work with those two in the near future.

Do you play games?

Not really no. The only game I've ever played relentlessly is FIFA (typical English answer).

What TV shows are you into right now, if any?

My favorite TV show is Breaking Bad, I think just like everyone else I watch Game of Thrones. I have a big soft spot for English TV shows that I watch online here, it makes me feel a little closer to home. They're called QI and Would I Lie To You? They're hilarious. If your readers are dorks then they would love QI (Quite Interesting).

What kind of foods do you like to eat?

I eat everything but my food of choice is sushi or pizza.

This is a random question I occasionally ask: if you were a cake, which would you be, and why?

I don't think I'd be a cake, I've got a sweet tooth so I'll never eat cake. But, is there such a thing as a 'Sarcastic Cake'? Something that looks like a cake, but actually tastes like pasta or pizza, something from Heston Blumenthal's cookbook.

That's it! That's all of the questions I have hidden in my pocket. Thank you so much for this opportunity to interview you, Graceson!

It's very interesting to know that Graceson is as much of a geek like us because he's a huge fan of Batman (Euri approves!), listens to a wide range of music, and watches a lot of TV shows. But the most interesting fact we found was that he loves pizza, like the rest of the GameOPS team who are all pizza-operated!

So guys, please watch out for the song "Have you ever?" coming out soon with his new LP titled "With Grace, Son."
