Even retro gaming pushes the limits of technology. The iPhone isn't supposed to support third-party client apps, much less third-party games. That's why this open-source iPhone NES emulator is just so damn cool. It even takes advantage of the iPhone's large multitouchscreen to include a classic NES joypad. It still has control issues and lacks audio, but it's a promising little work in progress.

I've just watched the Simpsons Movie a few hours ago and watching it reminded me of one of my favorite arcade games when I was in grade school --The Simpsons Arcade. I've asked Glen if he ever saw a NES or SNES version of the game, unfortunately there were none.

Fortunately for anyone who have internet access, an arcade emulator called MAME is just a few clicks away. MAME is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software, with the intent of preserving gaming history and preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The name is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

Owning and distributing MAME itself is legal in the USA (and obviously in the Philippines as well), as it is merely an emulator.

Anyway, I've found a ROM image of the original Simpsons Arcade game and gave it a try since I don't have to worry about running out of tokens. I used to play this game everytime my cousins and I went to SM North EDSA. Tokens that time cost about P2.00 - P3.00 each. Now let's start some Retro Gaming Nights :~)

The gameplay is simple. After stealing a diamond from Springfield Jewelers for his boss Mr. Burns, Smithers bumps into Homer Simpson and his family. Smithers lost the diamond and Maggie snatches it in her mouth. Smithers then grabbed Maggie and flees.

The game's levels are based on the streets of Springfield, Krustylu Studios, Moe's Tavern, Springfield Gorge, a graveyard, a dream world, the Channel 6 studio, and the Power Plant. Each level has its unique boss. Dreamland was the last level I reached when I was playing this in the arcades. Call it scarcity of tokens. HAHAHHA! :P

And there's these bonus rounds. Do you remember the screenshot above? You have to press the buttons quickly to beat your teammates to inflate a balloon. Ahh... memories :~)

Finally Mr. Burns! I never reached the end of this game in the arcades. Good thing I have unlimited supply of tokens :~)

Well it took me 16 years just to finish this game... now time to find that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game.

Looking for some nostalgic PC gaming? Then the Buffalo Famicom controller is the answer to all your video game wet dreams. It looks almost exactly like the Family Computer controllers with the added shoulder buttons and two more above the A and B buttons.

The controller is similar to the cheap ones being sold at CDR-King for P100. Features plug and play for Windows XP, Vista, 2000, and Mac. Drivers are included for Windows 98 and ME.

This controller is manufactured by Buffalo in Japan.

Glen has sent me a copy of the latest no$gba emulator the other week. He said that the latest version of the GBA emulator now features emulation for Nintendo DS ROMS and homebrews.

Here you could see Rocky trying out the New Super Mario Bros. game.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4ghz PC with 1GB of memory and still the CPU usage is maxed out to 100%. Overall, the opening sequence of Super Mario Bros. has glitchy 3D graphics while the gameplay speed is tolerable on my system. Glen reported that his Pentium 3 1ghz PC, the most mutated and stongest p3 PC you could ever see, can barely run the game.

After the brief test, we've deleted the Super Mario game and we won't tell you were we got it :P But instead, you may download homebrew games on pdroms.de
