Metal Gear Solid 2 was one of the reasons why I purchased an overpriced PS2 six years ago. Now I'm thinking of buying the PS3 after watching this preview. Dammit.
Playstation 3 was launched last year, all people were impressed with the power it has, it showed a lot of tech demo of upcoming exclusive games, one of which is the remake of Final Fantasy 7.
It’s been 7 months since it was launched. Where is the Final Fantasy 7 remake that Sony had promised during the tech demo of Playstation 3? Just look at the list of exclusive games listed in the figure above, no Final Fantasy 7! Even though this is not the official list of game exclusive of each respective consoles, it's still disappointing that Final Fantasy 7 was not included in the list, and also take note that the Playstation 3 come up with the least list of exclusive titles! What is happening to Sony? Is the Playstation 3 doom?
As I read the news regarding the Playstation 3, I found this article from Yahoo! News:
TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T) expects at least 380 new PlayStation 3 games to hit the market this business year and says that should rev up demand for the console that has so far lost out to Nintendo's (7974.OS) wildly popular Wii. ADVERTISEMENT
There are about 150 games currently available for the PS3, including online titles.
Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer said at the annual shareholders' meeting that the company will review its dividend policy once it has achieved its profitability target for the year to March 2008, raising the possibility of future dividend hikes.
"Attractive game software is the key to accelerate PS3 growth over the next year," Stringer said on Thursday.
Sony's game division posted an operating loss of 232 billion yen ($1.88 billion) in the past business year because of hefty start-up costs of the PS3, prompting investors to see the console business as Sony's biggest risk factor.
Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii game console has been outselling the PS3 by three to one in Japan and more than two to one in the United States so far this year, according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain and research firm NPD.
A lack of attractive games has been widely cited as a reason for the PS3's relatively weak performance in addition to the fact that it is twice as expensive as the Wii.
More than 200 packaged software titles will likely be released for the PS3 in the year to March 2008, and more than 180 titles are expected to be launched over the Internet, Stringer said.
"PlayStation 3 going forward will be vital to our future and we'll succeed," said Stringer, the first non-Japanese to run the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate.
Sony aims to double its PS3 shipments to 11 million units in the current business year and reduce the game unit's loss to 50 billion yen.
Hackers have been busy for the past few months to crack the PlayStation 3. One was able to slipstream a Blu-Ray disc to a PC and burned it on a blank Blu-Ray. Now the next step is to actually boot the game on a PlayStation 3. Hackers recently found an exploit on the 1.10 and 1.11 versions of the PS3 firmware that allowed them to boot copied or backup games on the PlayStation 3.
The games just boots but it doesn't actually play. But with the track record of these hackers, count a few months and you'll see PS3 modchips and backup games being sold everywhere. Via CVG

Philippine Star recently published an article why Sony has not released the PlayStation Portable / PSP officially in the Philippines. Sony Philippines blames the rampant piracy of the PlayStation games and their memory cards in the Philippines that Sony Japan decided not to officially release the PSP here. The PSP is currently available through import stores and the gray market.
Sony urged to state real reason for not bringing Playstation PSP to RP By Marianne V. Go Publication Date: [Monday, March 19, 2007]
Intellectual Property Office Philippines Director-General Adrian Cristobal Jr. criticized yesterday Sony Philippines for making it appear that Sony’s decision not to bring in its popular Playstation PSP to the Philippines is due to rampant piracy.
In an interview with The STAR, Cristobal felt offended at Sony’s insinuation that continued rampant piracy is behind its decision not to bring in its PSP product to the Philippines.
Cristobal pointed out that even though China is known to be more at the forefront of intellectual property rights piracy, Sony still chose to sell its PSP units there because of the huge Chinese consumer market.
Thus, Cristobal argued, Sony’s hesitancy to directly sell its PSP here in the Philippines is due more to lack of market rather than IPR piracy.
Sony Philippines president Hiroaki Kobayashi had previously told The STAR that the continued rampant piracy of its Playstation software is one reason why Sony Japan is hesitant to sell its PSP units in the Philippines.
Kobayashi said that almost all available Playstation software being sold in the Philippines are pirated copies.
Aside from its Playstation software, Kobayashi said, its memory stick for its digital cameras and video cams are also being pirated.
Sony, Cristobal further revealed, has not actually been coordinating closely with IP Philippines in helping crack down on its IPR violators.
Sony, like most other private IPR holders, Cristobal said, privately pursue their own enforcement and prosecution and coordinate more closely with the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police.
However, Cristobal appealed to Sony and other recent vocal complainants such as Philip Morris and Levi’s International to coordinate with IP Philippines.
Cristobal noted that the complaints of Sony, Philip Morris and Levi’s appear to be part of a lobby to have the Philippines retained in the United States Trade Representative (USTR) watchlist as the Philippines is currently undergoing its annual review.
The USTR review, Cristobal said, started in February and a report is expected by next month. Cristobal is hoping that the Philippines would be able to "graduate" out of the list, but would not be surprised at the country’s continued retention on the watchlist.
What's funny about what Cristobal said is that Sony should coordinate with them to help stop the piracy of their PlayStation software. Coordinate? Sony doesn't need to coordinate with them, piracy of PlayStation games are so rampant that you could even see them on the streets:
Sony Philippines should reconsider their strategy. Not all Filipinos support piracy, one good example is the guys over at Pinoy-N.com that support Nintendo's original games even though their prices are 10x more expensive.
