So, why the price hike?

This change comes as the Philippine government begins enforcing a 12% value-added tax (VAT) on digital services offered by international tech companies like Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and Google. It’s part of a broader law signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. back in October 2024, aimed at making the taxation system fairer by applying the same tax rules to both foreign digital services and local businesses.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue explained that this move is designed to level the playing field. Local shops and service providers have been paying VAT for years, while international digital platforms have mostly been exempt. Now, that gap is closing.

From 2025 to 2029, the government expects to collect ₱105 billion (around $1.9 billion) from this new policy. Interestingly, 5% of this revenue will be used to support Filipino creative industries, a welcome boost for local filmmakers, artists, and content creators.

Netflix was quick to inform its users about the upcoming change. The email reminded subscribers that their updated billing, reflecting the new VAT, will take effect on their next payment cycle starting June 1. It also reassured users that they can continue to enjoy a wide variety of shows and films, Netflix is rolling out 89 new titles next month alone.

New Netflix Pricing Starting June 1, 2025 (Philippine Peso)

Mobile: 169 PHP / month

Basic: 279 PHP / month

Standard: 449 PHP / month

> Add 1 extra member slot for 169 PHP / month

Premium: 619 PHP / month

> Add up to 2 extra member slots for 169 PHP each / month

While a ₱70 increase might not seem like much, it’s definitely something users will notice, especially for families juggling multiple streaming services. Still, for many, Netflix’s massive library remains worth the price.

It’s also worth noting that this VAT applies to other digital platforms too, so we might see similar price adjustments from services like Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ in the near future.
