Nihonsei: K-On!!

Hello guys and gals this is your resident otaku Siopao and I'm here to bring you the latest from the land of the rising sun. Now if you are an otaku or just a fan of Japanese culture, GameOPS' new section, NIHONSEI, is for you! Our first offering is a review of an anime that mesmerized thousands of otakus and spawned lots of merchandise.

K-On! is an anime comedy about the life of five high school girls who are membera of the light music club. They formed a band which they call Houkago Tea Time (HTT) After school Tea Time in English. The band consist of Yui Hirasawa (guitar), Ritsu Tainaka (drums), Mio Akiyama (bass), and Tsumugi Kotobuki (keyboard); the founding members of the Light Music Club. Together with their junior member Azusa Nakano (guitar).

If you are a fan of Japanese animation, this series will not be a disappointment. The Season 1 was very successful, Animax Asia bought the rights and is currently airing it on their prime time slot. Now that Season 2 had just aired a few weeks ago, many were wondering if the magic of K-On is still there. Now, I do not write a review of an anime that was aired for a few episodes, usually I review it six to seven episodes after to prevent some bias and one-sided criticism. A few exceptions may be considered like an anime who had a previous season, like K-on.

Now, How does K-On fair on its second season? Well, many were commenting that the story after the first season is pretty pointless now. The excitement of the new band being formed and their successful performance placed an end to the K-On hype. For me, season 2 will do just fine. If the writers will stick to the plot wherein the four founders are looking for replacements so that Azunyan will not be alone when they graduate. Expect lots of cliché here like the cultural festival, the summer and the Christmas episode which seems to be present on previous animes aired. The question is, will I watch K-On? Mio Akiyama is the only reason I will ever have.
