E3 2023 Officially Canceled

The Electronic Software Association (ESA) has officially announced the cancelation of E3 2023, leaving the gaming industry in disarray. E3, which has been the largest industry event of the year since its inception in 1995, has fallen victim to a combination of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a shift towards digital events.

While the ESA had previously promised a "revitalized showcase" in 2023, it appears that resourcing challenges and a lack of interest from partners have forced the organization to cancel all plans for the event. ReedPop, the organizer of E3, explained the cancelation as "what's right for the industry and what's right for E3."

The cancelation of E3 2023 has left many in the gaming industry wondering what the future holds. Will E3 return in 2024, or is the industry moving past the convention for good? While the ESA and ReedPop have confirmed that they will continue to work together on "future E3 events," it's unclear what form these events will take.

Despite the cancelation of E3's digital plans, partners such as 2K, Activision, Bandai Namco, Capcom, EA, Epic Games, Sega, PlayStation, Square Enix, Warner Bros., and Xbox have all confirmed that they will be moving forward with their own events in early June. While these events won't be under the E3 banner, they promise to deliver a similar digital experience.

The cancelation of E3 2023 is undoubtedly a blow to the gaming industry. However, it's important to remember that the industry is constantly evolving. E3 may have been the largest event of the year in the past, but it's possible that a new event or format will take its place in the future. For now, we'll have to wait and see what the ESA and ReedPop have in store for "future E3 events.
