Could a Stardew Valley Sequel Happen? Creator Says “Maybe,” But There's a Catch
If you’ve spent countless cozy hours tending crops and building your dream farm in Stardew Valley, you might be wondering if a sequel is ever coming. The game’s creator, Eric Barone, better known online as ConcernedApe, recently opened up about that possibility during a chat on the TigerBelly podcast. And while the idea of Stardew Valley 2 isn’t off the table, it sounds like fans shouldn’t expect it anytime soon.
Barone admitted that creating a brand new game from the ground up is a massive challenge. Compared to that, adding new features to Stardew Valley is a breeze. “All the systems are already done,” he explained. That means when he wants to introduce something new, like a quirky green rain or another fun surprise, it’s as simple as dropping it into the existing game.
That’s why he keeps updating Stardew Valley rather than shifting focus to a full-blown sequel. And let’s be honest, with all the new updates over the years, the original game still feels fresh.
Still, Barone didn’t rule out the idea entirely. “I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest,” he said. That small hint was enough to stir excitement across the fanbase, though he made no promises about when, or if, that would actually happen.
"I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest. It’s just so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch. The major systems are already all done. That’s the stuff that’s not fun to do. When I make an update, it’s like, you know – ‘oh, throw in this, throw in that. Let’s add green rain."
In the meantime, Barone is focused on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier. He described it as something very different and admitted he doesn’t want to be seen as just “the Stardew Valley guy.” That said, don’t hold your breath waiting for it. He made it clear that the new game still needs a lot of work and it has to live up to, if not surpass, the success of Stardew Valley.
For now, fans can keep enjoying new additions to their favorite farming sim while keeping their eyes peeled for updates on Barone’s next big adventure.
