YouTube Tries Out a More Affordable Premium Plan for Two
YouTube has been pushing hard to get more users to go Premium, and now it looks like they’re trying a new way to make that jump a bit easier. The streaming giant is testing a fresh subscription option that allows two people to share a Premium plan, which could be a perfect fit for couples, siblings, or roommates.
This experimental plan is being rolled out in a few regions, India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, where users can now subscribe to a YouTube Premium or Music Premium plan together. The only conditions are that both people must be at least 13 years old, have their own Google accounts, and belong to the same Google Family group.
In India, for example, the two-person Premium plan is being offered at Rs. 219 a month (around $2.60), and the music-only version comes in even cheaper at Rs. 149 (roughly $1.77). Since India typically gets lower subscription pricing, users in other countries can expect slightly different rates if this plan becomes widely available.
YouTube has officially acknowledged the test, saying that they're looking at “new ways to offer more flexibility and value” to their Premium subscribers. By introducing this middle-ground plan between the Individual and Family options, YouTube hopes to appeal to smaller households who find the Family plan a bit too much.
The Two-person plan seems designed to encourage sharing, but only up to a point. While it’s a nice step up from the solo plan in terms of savings, it doesn’t beat the Family plan if you're three or more. Still, it’s a smart option for those living together who want to skip the ads without paying full price individually.
If you're still not ready to go fully Premium, there's also the Lite version, which strips out the extras like background play and downloads but still removes most ads, except on music and Shorts. It’s a budget option, though it definitely lacks some of the features people love about full Premium.
As of now, there's no news on when or if the Two-person plan will roll out globally. But it’s something to keep an eye on, especially if you're looking to save a little while still enjoying YouTube without interruptions.
