Filipino Students Revive Revolutionary Spirit in New RTS Game Insureksyon
A fresh wave of Filipino creativity is making waves in the indie gaming scene with Insureksyon, a real-time strategy game crafted by students from Ateneo de Naga University. Now playable on Itch.io, this project shines a light on the country’s rich history through an exciting, fast-paced gameplay experience.
Behind Insureksyon are Paolo Alegre, Jude Papina, and Ryan Madrideo, three passionate game development students under the guidance of Edlaine Ann S. Mercado. They set out to design a game that combines traditional RTS mechanics, like commanding troops, gathering resources, and building bases, with a narrative inspired by the unity and defiance of the Katipunan era.
Players step into the boots of a Heneral, leading a revolutionary force called the Republika. The goal is to reclaim territories and break free from the control of a powerful empire, echoing the spirit of resistance Filipinos know well. While the story doesn’t stick to exact historical events, its Filipino voice lines and atmosphere make every battle feel authentic and relatable.
Insureksyon not only showcases what young local developers are capable of but also reflects a growing trend of homegrown games drawing inspiration from Philippine culture. For those curious to experience this unique take on the RTS genre, the game can be downloaded for free from Itch.io. It’s a small but proud step for local talent aiming to reach players worldwide.
