Indie Game “GiLGuL” Blends Deep Storytelling and Tactical Battles
Fans of Japanese adventure games have a new title to explore: GiLGuL, which launched on Steam on June 19, 2025. Created by indie studio Production Exabilities and published by Skeleton Crew Studio, GiLGuL combines an emotional journey about life and death with real-time tactical combat, all brought to life by some of Japan’s top voice talent.
In Yiddish, “GiLGuL” means “reincarnation” — a fitting title for a game that revolves around a girl’s desperate struggle to stay alive in a strange, haunting world caught between existence and oblivion.
A Journey Through the Interworld
Players follow Mitsu Mao, a young girl who refuses to let go of life. She finds herself trapped in the Interworld, a mysterious realm made up of countless floors. Rumor has it that reaching the highest floor might lead her back to reality. Determined to escape, Mao climbs higher and higher, meeting people who had once wished for death but couldn’t find peace.
Each encounter reveals a painful story, deep regrets, and sometimes, a chance for redemption. The more Mao learns about others, the more she discovers about herself and what it truly means to live.
A Fully Voiced Adventure
One thing that makes GiLGuL stand out is its cast. Well-known Japanese voice actors like Tomoyo Takayanagi (as Mao Mitsu) and Yuina Itou (as Bikke) breathe life into the characters, making every conversation feel raw and real.
Choices and Tactics Matter
The game balances its emotional storytelling with intense tactical battles. Players must plan strategies, use special skills, and work together with companions to fight off the monsters that guard each floor. Every choice made influences Mao’s bonds with others and the outcome of her journey.
A Soundtrack to Remember
Adding to the game’s unique vibe is its theme song, GiLGuL Reincarnation. This haunting track is performed by Megumi Nakajima, known for her role as Ranka Lee in Macross Frontier, together with the talented creator yuigot, whose catchy collaborations have gained him a loyal following.
