Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Brings Back Classic Kombat With a Fresh Twist

There’s exciting news for fighting game fans, especially those who grew up mashing buttons on the old arcade machines or consoles, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is on the way. This retro-filled bundle will drop sometime in 2025 and includes several of the earliest Mortal Kombat titles, giving old-school players a blast from the past and new fans a chance to experience the roots of the iconic franchise.

Announced during the June 2025 PlayStation State of Play showcase, this collection is being developed by Digital Eclipse, the same studio known for lovingly remastering classic games. Their latest project focuses on the first few Mortal Kombat titles and some Game Boy and console ports, all packed into one massive set. It will be available for just about every platform, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, and both Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.

Among the confirmed games are:

  • Mortal Kombat (1992) – with versions from arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and Game Gear
  • Mortal Kombat II (1993) – including arcade and console editions
  • Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) – a personal favorite of mine because it was a gift from my dad when I graduated sixth grade
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – the enhanced version of MK3
  • Mortal Kombat 4 (1997) – arcade version
  • Plus handheld hits like Mortal Kombat Advance, Deadly Alliance, and Tournament Edition

But this isn’t just a simple re-release of old games. Legacy Kollection also comes with some modern upgrades. Online multiplayer will be supported using rollback netcode, which is great for smooth matches with friends or rivals. There's also a treasure trove of bonus content, concept art, rare footage, old marketing promos, and even interviews with original creators like Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden.

Another standout feature is the “interactive documentary” approach, a signature style from Digital Eclipse. It digs into how Mortal Kombat not only revolutionized fighting games but also stirred controversy for its digitized characters and violent gameplay back in the day. Through this mode, players can explore the history of the franchise and understand how it shaped the gaming world over the last three decades.

The full list of titles in the bundle is still under wraps, so there may be more surprises waiting. With a promise of additional games and hidden content, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection seems like it’s more than just a nostalgia trip, it’s a celebration of a fighting game legacy that refuses to fade.
