OPPO and Volkswagen Team Up to Power Smarter Cars with 5G Tech
OPPO is stepping beyond smartphones as it partners with Volkswagen Group to bring advanced cellular technology to connected cars worldwide. The two companies have sealed a global licensing deal that gives Volkswagen access to OPPO’s essential patents for mobile networks, including powerful 5G innovations.
This agreement marks a first for OPPO in the automotive industry. By sharing its standard-essential patents with a major carmaker, OPPO is showing how its telecom expertise can upgrade vehicles, making rides safer and more connected.
Volkswagen’s Chief IP Licensing Officer, Robin Cefai, praised the deal, calling it a smart and respectful way to handle important patents. He highlighted how both sides were focused on finding practical solutions that benefit everyone involved.
OPPO’s Vincent Lin, who leads the company’s patent licensing efforts, said the Volkswagen partnership proves how serious OPPO is about building a healthy, sustainable ecosystem for intellectual property. He also credited Volkswagen’s IP team for understanding the value of this cooperation early on.
OPPO has been making big moves in technology beyond phones. It currently holds thousands of 5G patents used in over 40 countries. According to LexisNexis IPlytics, OPPO is among the top ten companies worldwide in terms of 5G patent strength as of early 2025.
With more than 62,000 granted patents and continued investment in 5G, AI, charging tech, and imaging, OPPO shows no signs of slowing down. For car owners, this partnership means future Volkswagen vehicles will be even smarter and more connected, thanks to OPPO’s mobile network know-how.
