PBBM Pushes for Full Internet Access in All Philippine Schools This Year
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. wants every public school in the country to be connected to the internet before the year ends. This goal aims to close the digital gap for thousands of students, especially those in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
Recently, the President led a teleconference from Flora A. Ylagan High School in Quezon City, where he spoke directly with teachers and officials from ten schools in distant barangays, islands, and upland villages. Thanks to satellite-powered internet, even schools in the mountains and isolated coasts joined the call.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara was on-site at a school in Agusan del Norte during the teleconference. This particular school mainly serves the Higaonon indigenous community and can only be reached after a two-hour trip that includes crossing two rivers. It now has power and internet after the Department of Energy and National Electrification Administration (NEA) stepped in.
NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda shared that they plan to energize 295 “Last Mile Schools” within the year. These schools are located in places where kids have to face tough conditions just to learn, no stable electricity, weak or no internet, and often unsafe classrooms.
In North Cotabato’s upland town of Makilala, teachers used to climb hills just to get a mobile signal. In an island barangay in Dapa, Surigao del Norte, residents had to walk to the shoreline for an internet connection. Now, with internet installed in their schools, local communities also benefit. Teachers in Makilala say neighbors even drop by to use the school’s Wi-Fi for other needs.
President Marcos appreciated how the connection is helping not just students but whole communities. He assured everyone that the government will keep expanding programs like this to make sure no learner is left offline.
