Xbox Goes Portable with ROG Xbox Ally

Microsoft is finally stepping into the handheld gaming scene, and it’s doing it with a bang. Teaming up with ASUS, they’ve introduced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, two powerful handheld gaming devices designed to let players take their favorite Xbox and PC games on the go.

Unveiled during a recent Xbox digital showcase, the devices are set to hit the shelves just in time for the holiday rush. While the pricing and exact release dates are still under wraps, the announcement itself stirred up excitement, especially coming so soon after Nintendo launched its upgraded Switch 2.

The new ROG Xbox Ally isn't just another portable console. According to Xbox president Sarah Bond, it’s a full Xbox experience, made compact enough to fit in your hands. What sets it apart is its versatility. This isn’t just a device for Game Pass titles or Xbox exclusives, players will also have access to games from other major platforms like Steam, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG. That’s a pretty big deal if you’ve already built a game library across different services.

Visually, the handheld units look like stretched-out Xbox controllers with screens in the middle. The button layouts, grips, and thumbsticks feel familiar to Xbox players, but the added screen in the center gives it a sleek, all-in-one look.

When powered on, the device boots straight into an optimized Xbox full screen experience, a custom interface tailored for portable play. Whether you’re on a long flight, chilling on the couch, or gaming between airport gates, this device is designed to keep you connected to your games wherever you are.

With portable gaming becoming more popular than ever, and with Nintendo already dominating the space for years, Microsoft’s move into handheld gaming shows they’re ready to compete seriously in this growing market.
