NTC Sets Final 12 Month Countdown for Analog TV Shutdown

The slow shift from analog to digital TV in the Philippines is finally reaching its finish line. After years of postponements since the original 2015 target, the National Telecommunications Commission has released a new directive that gives broadcasters 12 months to completely switch off their analog channels. The transition will begin in Mega Manila, which includes NCR and several nearby provinces.

The NTC explained that most TV households in the area already use digital boxes or digital ready sets. Their latest estimate shows that about 80 percent of viewers no longer rely on analog signals. Because of this, the agency believes the remaining viewers form a small minority that can still be assisted during the phaseout period.

To give clarity to broadcasters, the NTC issued a memorandum titled “Guidelines for the Switch Off of the Analog TV Service in Mega Manila.” Based on the circular, TV stations using the VHF band have already been running both analog and digital broadcasts for more than eight years. With digital technology now widely adopted, the regulator says it is time to move forward with the final shutdown.

Once the circular takes effect, the full transition to digital TV is expected by November 2026. However, the government will still allow a 60 day countdown prior to the actual switch off. During this period, networks will air public reminders to prepare affected households.

The rule applies to all cities in the National Capital Region and nearby provinces including Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Pampanga and Bataan. Viewers in these areas who still depend on analog antennas are encouraged to shift to digital boxes or compatible TVs while the countdown is ongoing.

For many Filipinos, this long awaited change promises clearer pictures, better sound and a wider selection of channels. After more than a decade of delays, it looks like the era of analog television in Mega Manila is finally coming to a close.
