Philippines Eyes Ethical AI Leadership as 2026 ASEAN Chair
As the Philippines prepares to take the helm of ASEAN in 2026, one of its key focus areas will be the responsible use of artificial intelligence across the region. Officials say the country plans to push for AI development that benefits people while keeping safety, fairness, and sustainability in mind.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Philippine chairmanship aims to help ASEAN become more future ready by embracing innovation without losing sight of human values. The goal is to encourage technologies that support peace, growth, and inclusive development, with AI playing a major role.
Economic growth is also part of the plan. The Philippines sees AI and other emerging technologies as tools that can improve public services, make trade more efficient, and help small and medium sized businesses stay competitive in a fast changing digital economy.
This direction aligns with recent discussions at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in South Korea, where President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted how AI is reshaping economies and societies. He pointed out its potential to modernize government services and open new opportunities for businesses.
Regional leaders have already taken steps in this direction. In October, APEC economies agreed on a shared AI initiative running from 2026 to 2030. The plan focuses on advancing innovation, improving skills and capabilities, and encouraging investments in reliable AI infrastructure.
With ASEAN leadership approaching, the Philippines appears set to bring these regional commitments together, using its chairmanship to promote AI that supports long term growth while remaining ethical and people centered.
