DOST Introduces Handa Platform for Disaster Preparedness and Alerts
Getting real-time disaster updates in the Philippines might soon be easier, thanks to a newly launched government platform that puts everything in one place.
The Department of Science and Technology, together with Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, recently introduced “Handa,” a website designed to combine different disaster-related tools into a single system. Instead of checking multiple sources, users can now access alerts, reports, and safety information all in one hub.
The idea behind Handa is simple. Important data already exists, but it is often scattered across different agencies. According to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., the real challenge has been organizing that information in a way that people can actually use when it matters most.
The platform gathers updates from key agencies like PHIVOLCS, weather services, and geoscience groups. It also includes features that feel more modern compared to traditional government sites. Users can see near real-time updates, receive alerts based on their location, and explore interactive dashboards that make information easier to understand.
One feature that stands out is the ability for users to report incidents directly through the website. Whether it is flooding, fires, or road accidents, people can send reports that may help speed up emergency response. There is also an SOS function that allows users to share their location with responders, which could be crucial during emergencies.
To make things even more accessible, Handa includes an AI-powered chatbot. This tool can answer questions about hazards, weather conditions, and safety tips depending on where the user is located. It is a small addition, but it could make a big difference for people who need quick answers during uncertain situations.
Overall, the platform reflects a growing effort to connect technology, government data, and everyday users. By bringing everything together, the goal is to help communities stay informed and act faster when disasters strike.
