Grab Philippines Investigates Claims of Higher Fares for GrabUnlimited Users

Ride-hailing giant Grab Philippines is now reviewing complaints from users who believe they are being charged more despite paying for a subscription service.

The issue started gaining attention online after several users shared screenshots comparing fares. In some cases, people using GrabUnlimited reportedly saw higher prices than those using regular accounts, even for the same trip. One viral post showed a subscriber being charged over ₱200, while another user booking the same ride paid less. Similar stories quickly followed, raising questions about how fares are calculated.

Grab responded by explaining that its pricing system works in real time. Fares can change depending on several factors like traffic, distance, driver availability, and overall demand. Since these conditions can shift within seconds, even two bookings made almost at the same time can end up with different prices. The company also noted that prices may vary across devices or sessions, which can sometimes confuse users comparing rates.

According to Grab, the base fare is not affected by whether a user is subscribed or not. Everyone supposedly sees the same starting price at a given moment. Subscription perks, such as discounts and vouchers, are only applied after that base fare is generated.

Still, the company acknowledged the concerns and confirmed that it has started checking specific reports. A wider review of its pricing system is also underway to make sure everything is working as intended. If any issues are found, Grab said it will take the necessary steps to fix them.

For now, users are left watching closely, especially those paying for GrabUnlimited, hoping the investigation brings clearer answers about how fares are really being computed.
