DSWD Eyes Faster Aid Delivery for PUV Drivers Through Digital Payouts
Getting financial aid into the hands of public utility vehicle drivers has always been a race against time, especially during difficult periods. To speed things up, the Department of Social Welfare and Development is now looking at a more modern solution, going digital.
In a recent virtual meeting, the agency brought together several financial service providers and e-wallet companies to discuss how cash assistance can be distributed more efficiently. The move follows a directive from Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to improve how aid reaches those who need it most.
According to DSWD officials, traditional cash payouts still work, but they come with challenges. Long lines, travel time, and processing delays often make it harder for beneficiaries to receive help quickly.
By shifting to digital platforms, the process becomes faster and more convenient. Funds can be sent directly to mobile wallets or bank accounts, cutting down the need for physical presence and reducing waiting time.
The agency also highlighted that digital payouts offer better transparency and tracking. This means fewer chances of errors and a clearer record of where the funds go.
Under the proposed setup, PUV drivers can choose their preferred payout method, whether through banks or e-wallet services. Once approved, the financial assistance can be sent straight to their accounts.
Drivers will still have the option to withdraw their funds in cash if needed, giving them flexibility depending on their situation.
To make sure everything runs smoothly, partner institutions are required to verify user identities and ensure that all transactions are secure and properly recorded.
Several key players in the financial sector have shown interest in supporting the initiative. These include Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Maya Philippines, G-Xchange Inc., Cebuana Lhuillier Corporation, and GoTyme Bank, along with other service providers.
These groups are expected to work closely with the DSWD to build a system that can handle large-scale payouts while remaining reliable and easy to use.
Despite the push for digital solutions, the agency clarified that in-person payouts will still be available when necessary. This ensures that drivers without access to digital tools are not left behind.
The transition is expected to roll out in time for the next round of cash assistance distribution, with interested partners required to submit their applications before the mid-April deadline.
For many drivers, this shift could mean quicker access to much-needed support, without the usual hassle of lining up and waiting for hours.
