PH Government Pressures Meta to Crack Down on Fake News Surge

The Philippine government is stepping up its call for stronger action against fake news, urging tech giant Meta Platforms to move faster in dealing with harmful content spreading online.

In a joint move, the Presidential Communications Office and the Department of Information and Communications Technology sent a formal letter to Mark Zuckerberg, pushing for tighter controls on misleading posts. The concern is not just about false information, but how quickly it spreads and affects people, especially during sensitive times.

Officials pointed out that the country is currently facing economic pressure due to rising fuel costs and increasing prices of basic goods. Because of this, even a single misleading post about oil prices or government actions can easily cause panic, confusion, or even unnecessary buying and price spikes.

The government is asking Meta to improve how it detects and removes dangerous content. This includes faster takedowns of flagged posts, stronger systems to catch viral misinformation early, and a dedicated team that can coordinate with authorities around the clock. They also want clearer timelines on how quickly Meta should respond, plus regular reports on what actions are being taken.

There is also a legal angle to the issue. Authorities stressed that spreading false information that could disrupt public order or influence markets may lead to penalties under Philippine law, especially if it results in hoarding, profiteering, or manipulation of supply.

If Meta fails to respond properly, officials warned that regulatory action could follow. The company has been given a short timeline to acknowledge the request and submit a concrete plan.

At this point, frustration is growing among observers and officials alike. Even Senator Risa Hontiveros has previously called out Meta for not doing enough, despite the continued presence of verified accounts spreading misleading content. Many of these accounts carry blue checkmarks, which makes the situation even more concerning since verification is supposed to signal authenticity.

There is a growing sentiment that stricter consequences should be imposed. Some believe that accounts repeatedly spreading false information should be permanently removed, especially if they are verified. Since these profiles go through identity checks, there is also an argument that relevant details could be shared with law enforcement when necessary.

For now, all eyes are on how Meta will respond, and whether stronger enforcement will finally make a dent in the spread of fake news online.
