Samsung Is Phasing Out Its Messages App
If you are using a Samsung phone, a small but noticeable change is coming soon. Samsung has confirmed that it will officially retire its built-in messaging app by July 2026.
Instead of its own app, users will be encouraged to switch to Google Messages as the default texting platform. The idea here is simple, create a more unified messaging experience across Android devices.
Not everyone will be affected right away though. Those still running older systems, particularly Android 11 or earlier, can continue using Samsung Messages without any changes for now. But for users on newer versions, the transition will likely be unavoidable.
To make things easier, Samsung will send out notifications inside the app itself. These prompts will guide users step by step on how to move over to Google Messages. It is a pretty straightforward process, just install or open the app, set it as your default SMS tool, and you are good to go.
There are a few extra steps if you want things to look clean on your home screen. After switching, you might need to manually remove the old Samsung Messages icon and replace it with Google Messages, especially if you are using Android 12 or 13. It is more of a quick cleanup than a complicated setup.
This move shows how Android is slowly becoming more standardized, with Google’s own apps taking center stage even on devices from other brands. For users, it could mean better compatibility and more consistent features across different phones.
If you have been relying on Samsung Messages for years, this might feel like a small shift, but it is part of a bigger change happening in the Android ecosystem.
