Saying Goodbye to Classic Pokemon Games: Nintendo Closes 3DS and Wii U eShops
Pokemon fans, brace yourselves. Once Nintendo shuts down the 3DS and Wii U eShops this month, a staggering 75% of the Pokemon games in their back catalogue will no longer be available commercially. Phil Salvador of Video Game History Foundation recently tweeted a graph showing how few Pokemon games will be left to purchase after the shutdown.
Happy #PokemonDay! Pokémon is one of the biggest franchises in gaming, but did you know that once Nintendo closes the 3DS and Wii U eShops next month, 74% of all Pokémon games released in the US will be commercially unavailable in any form? It's true! pic.twitter.com/54NZTW61BP

The 26% of games that will still be available includes the likes of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon Sword and Sheild, and others that are all playable on the Nintendo Switch. However, the majority of the fan-favorite titles will be lost, such as Pokemon Red and Blue, Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Gold and Silver, and many more.
It's no surprise that long-time Pokemon fans are feeling disappointed about the closure of the eShops, which means that they may no longer be able to play some of their favorite games in the series. The only hope now is that Nintendo brings more Pokemon games to the Nintendo Switch via Nintendo Switch Online, but there isn't a DS, 3DS, or Wii virtual console available just yet.
For those who are desperate to revisit classic Pokemon games, the only option left is to purchase second-hand cartridges, which can be expensive and unreliable. It's a sad time for Pokemon fans, but we can still hope that Nintendo has something in store for us in the future.
