Dolphy’s “Banayad Whisky” Is Now a Real Drink You Can Actually Buy
If you're one of those who grew up watching Dolphy’s timeless comedy, there’s no way you missed the legendary “Banayad Whisky” scene from Father en Son. In the 1995 film, Dolphy plays an actor struggling to shoot a whisky commercial. He gamely gulps down a ridiculously strong drink and deadpans the now-famous line: “Lasang blade.” It’s one of those moments that never gets old, and now, it’s turned into something real.
The sketch made the rounds on the internet again, racking up millions of views on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. Its popularity gave rise to imitation bottles claiming to be “Banayad Whisky,” some of which even bore Dolphy’s face without permission. Naturally, this didn’t sit well with the Quizon family, especially since these bootleg liquors could be dangerous and had nothing to do with the real legacy of the Comedy King.
That’s why Dolphy’s family took matters into their own hands. They created PBW Manila Enterprise Inc., short for Pidol’s Banayad Whisky, and finally made an official, safe, and high-quality version of the drink. Yes, it’s legit now. The real Banayad Whisky bottles proudly feature Dolphy’s face and even a small razor blade icon, a cheeky wink to the classic “lasang blade” line.
Dolphy’s son, Epy Quizon, shared that his father actually enjoyed dark spirits back in the day. He liked whisky and cognac but eventually had to switch to wine for health reasons. So when it came to producing Banayad Whisky, the family knew it had to be premium, something Dolphy himself would’ve enjoyed.
They didn’t settle for just anything. One of their business partners reached out to whisky suppliers in Scotland, yes, the Scotland, and after some convincing (and probably a few laughs at the viral sketch), a Scottish partner flew to Manila with samples. The result? Two blended whiskies that pay proper tribute.
The first is a 3-year-old blend that’s light, floral, and easy to sip, great with light snacks or even dessert. The second is a 12-year-old blend that’s richer and bolder, though still smooth and friendly even for casual drinkers. Think subtle oak and gentle smoke, perfect with grilled food or hearty dishes.
Right now, the bottles are available exclusively through Dolphy’s family. That means you can even get your hands on collector’s editions with autographs and dates. They’re keeping things small and personal for now, but there are plans to expand and maybe even launch gin and tequila under the same brand soon.
So, does it really taste like “blade”?
Let’s just say it’s smoother than you’d expect.
