Makati-Based Firm in Hot Water Over Alleged China Election Interference
A marketing company in Makati is under intense scrutiny after being linked to suspected foreign meddling in the country’s upcoming elections. According to Senator Francis Tolentino, InfinitUs Marketing Solutions Inc. could potentially face treason charges, along with violations of certain cybercrime laws.
During a recent interview on ANC, Tolentino revealed that the Chinese Embassy allegedly hired the firm to handle online information operations. This includes deploying so-called “keyboard warriors” to manage issues and influence narratives online, especially those related to crisis situations and political matters.
One key detail that caught attention was a check amounting to ₱930,000 dated September 11, 2023. This payment, supposedly from the Chinese Embassy, was allegedly used to fund campaigns critical of the Philippine government while promoting China's own policies.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has already issued a subpoena to InfinitUs, launching a formal probe into the matter. Authorities are also looking into the company's tax records and whether it is properly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
China, on the other hand, has flatly denied any involvement, stating that it has no interest in meddling in the internal affairs of the Philippines.
Senator Tolentino, however, expressed frustration and disappointment. He questioned why a Filipino company would agree to be used by a foreign power, suggesting that this act was a betrayal of national loyalty. He even hinted at the possibility of expelling Chinese diplomats if proven that their involvement crossed the line.
For many, this issue hits deeper than just political influence. It raises questions about national integrity, foreign interference, and the responsibility of Filipino companies to act in the country's best interest.
