HUAWEI Introduces HarmonyOS for PCs, Taking Aim at Windows and macOS

HUAWEI is stepping up its game in the tech world by introducing HarmonyOS for PCs. This move expands its custom operating system beyond phones and tablets, bringing it to laptops for the very first time. HarmonyOS is already used in a wide range of HUAWEI gadgets, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smart TVs, and now it’s making the leap to computers.

This new version for PCs is built from the ground up using HUAWEI's own technology, known as the "Harmony base." That includes its own kernel, security framework, programming language, and tools for developers. It’s not a variation of Android or Windows, but a whole new system built to give HUAWEI full control, especially important after the company faced global trade restrictions that cut off access to some American tech.

Security plays a huge role in the new OS. HarmonyOS for PC includes app verification, strict permission systems, and developer identity checks. There's even a privacy mode that can block access to the microphone, camera, and location tracking. To protect sensitive files, the OS uses hardware-level encryption, which means even if someone removes your hard drive, they still can’t read your data.

For those who rely on productivity tools, HUAWEI says HarmonyOS will support AI features, cloud syncing, and smooth cross-device connections, so your phone, tablet, and laptop can work together easily. Businesses might also be interested in the OS thanks to its built-in enterprise tools and cloud-based management options.

HarmonyOS for PC officially arrives on May 19, starting with upcoming HUAWEI laptops. But whether it can truly compete with the likes of Windows and macOS depends on how well developers, users, and hardware partners respond.
