Is Codemasters on the Brink of Closing Down?
Longtime racing game fans might feel a pang of nostalgia hearing this, but it looks like Codemasters, the studio behind classics like Micro Machines V3 and F1 Race Stars, could be in real trouble. The developer has a rich history, especially with Nintendo consoles, dating all the way back to the NES and SNES days. Their games were once a staple on Wii and DS, and for many gamers, they were a big part of growing up.
But those glory days might be behind them. Recent changes at EA, the company that now owns Codemasters, suggest the studio’s future is uncertain. It was already announced that Codemasters would no longer be working on the WRC series, and several team members have either been laid off or reassigned to other EA titles. And now, the rumors are getting louder.
A report by Twitter user @eXtas1stv claims that EA is planning to completely shut down Codemasters’ main studio. Around 400 more employees might be affected, and some of them could be absorbed into teams working on EA’s F1 games or an upcoming Need for Speed title.

These whispers come shortly after EA canceled a Black Panther game and closed down Cliffhanger Games, a relatively new studio made up of former Monolith Productions developers. It’s not just Codemasters feeling the shake-up, EA seems to be going through a major restructuring, and not everyone is making it out the other side.
If the rumors turn out to be true, it would mark the end of an era for Codemasters. For many, this studio defined what a great racing game could be. While nothing is officially confirmed just yet, things aren’t looking too hopeful.
A lot of us are still crossing our fingers that this is just a misunderstanding or a rumor blown out of proportion. But given EA’s recent moves, that might be wishful thinking.
