New ‘Superman’ Trailer Reveals Unexpected Characters
James Gunn has just dropped the first official trailer for his upcoming Superman film, and fans are buzzing. While we all expected to see the usual faces from Metropolis, the trailer throws in some surprising names that hint at a much bigger universe ahead.
One of the biggest surprises is the appearance of Angela Spica, better known as The Engineer. She’s not your typical Superman character. She comes straight out of The Authority, a lesser-known but edgy DC comic series. Her body is basically made of liquid metal thanks to nanotechnology in her bloodstream, allowing her to create all sorts of weapons and gadgets on the fly. Gunn had already teased that The Authority would be part of the revamped DC Universe, and now we’re seeing that vision come to life.
The trailer also gives us glimpses of key figures in Clark Kent’s world. We see him as both the mild-mannered journalist and the powerful Superman, played by David Corenswet. Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, shares screen time with him in what looks like a very grounded and heartfelt moment. There’s even a shot of Clark having an emotional conversation with his dad, Jonathan Kent, played by Pruitt Taylor Vince, who reminds him that the choices he makes define who he is.
Beyond the Kent family and the Daily Planet, Gunn introduces other major characters from across the DC universe. There’s Rick Flag Sr. from A.R.G.U.S. (portrayed by Frank Grillo), the sharp-tongued gossip columnist Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), and several DC heroes like Mister Terrific (Eli Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Guy Gardner’s version of Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion). And yes, Lex Luthor is here too, now played by Nicholas Hoult.
This trailer doesn’t just tease epic action scenes, it also leans into the emotional side of Superman’s story. It feels like Gunn is aiming to show us not just what Superman can do, but who he is underneath the cape.
Mark your calendars, Superman is flying into Philippine cinemas starting July 9, 2025.
