Tuguegarao Councilor Draws Flak for Reading AI-Generated Prayer with Instructions Still Included

A Tuguegarao City councilor has found herself the subject of online mockery after reading an AI-generated opening prayer during a city council session, complete with the editing note left by the AI.

During the June 17 session, the councilor stood to lead the prayer, a standard part of the program. What wasn't standard was the phrasing that followed: “May we also pray… feel free to modify this prayer or tailor it to your specific needs and benefits…” It was an obvious instruction meant for the user, not for public reading.

The moment was livestreamed on the Tuguegarao City Council’s official Facebook page, and it didn’t take long before the clip was picked up by vlogs and news outlets. Soon, the internet did what it does best, reacted, laughed, and criticized.

Some users quickly pointed out the likely source of the prayer: an AI chatbot like ChatGPT, which often ends responses with suggestions like “Feel free to review it and let me know if you’d like to add or change anything.” Netizens dubbed the moment as “awkward,” “cringe,” and “unnecessary,” especially for something as personal as a prayer.

One comment sarcastically read, “In ChatGPT we trust,” while another added, “In ChatGPT, we pray.” The clip's popularity even led to the councilor being jokingly dubbed the “ChatGPT Queen.”

Critics weren't just laughing, they were disappointed too. Many questioned the sincerity of using a chatbot for a prayer, saying it should have come from the heart. Some pointed out that it wasn’t just the use of AI that was problematic, but the fact that the councilor didn’t take time to review or edit the content before reading it live.

“You already copied it, and you still read the instructions,” one frustrated commenter said. Another added, “If you’re going to rely on AI, at least read through what you’re saying.”

As of this writing, the councilor has not released any public statement to address the incident.
