MRT / LRT Announce 12 Days of Free Rides for the Holidays
Commuters in Metro Manila are getting an early holiday treat as major rail lines gear up for a special 12 day free ride program. The Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, along with the Metro Rail Transit 3, will be offering fare free trips to selected groups starting December 14 until Christmas Day.
The initiative, shared by the Department of Transportation on social media, follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to make holiday travel easier and more comfortable for the public. Instead of a one time event, each day highlights a specific group that can hop on the trains without paying a single peso.
Here is the full lineup of who gets the free rides each day:
- Dec. 14, senior citizens
- Dec. 15, students
- Dec. 16, overseas Filipino workers and their families
- Dec. 17, teachers and health workers
- Dec. 18, persons with disabilities and male passengers
- Dec. 19, government employees
- Dec. 20, female passengers
- Dec. 21, families, no matter how many they are
- Dec. 22, solo parents and LGBTQIA+ members
- Dec. 23, private sector employees and household helpers
- Dec. 24, uniformed personnel, veterans, and their families
On December 25, the Christmas spirit extends to everyone, because all passengers can enjoy a free ride on that day.
This seasonal treat is expected to help ease commuting costs at a time when many families are busy with gatherings, errands, and year-end travel. It also adds a little holiday cheer to an otherwise hectic December in the city.
