Netflix Ends Mobile Casting for Chromecast and Google TV

Netflix has quietly removed a feature that many subscribers loved: the ability to cast shows and movies from smartphones to certain TVs and streaming devices. The change mainly affects devices that come with their own remote controls, including the latest Chromecast models and standalone Google TV devices.

Now, if you want to watch Netflix on these devices, you’ll need to open the Netflix app directly on your TV and navigate using the remote control. The familiar Cast icon that appeared in the Netflix phone app is no longer there, leaving mobile control fans a bit frustrated.

This update was first spotted in mid-November and later confirmed on Netflix’s help page, though the company didn’t make any formal announcement beforehand.

A few devices remain unaffected. Older Chromecast sticks without a physical remote, and some smart TVs with built-in casting technology, can still receive content from your phone. However, there’s a catch for budget-conscious users: those on Netflix’s ad-supported plan cannot cast at all, even on older compatible devices. Only subscribers on premium, ad-free plans can continue using casting features.

Netflix support said this change was made to “enhance the member experience,” but offered no additional details. This move follows a similar decision from 2019 when Netflix ended AirPlay support for iPhones and iPads, hinting at a strategy to shift viewing from mobile screens to TVs and their native apps.

For viewers who frequently cast from phones, this is a reminder that Netflix is gradually pushing toward a more TV-focused streaming experience, and relying on a remote is the new normal for certain devices.
