Online Scams Decline as Government Cyber Efforts Gain Ground
Online scams in the Philippines have seen a noticeable drop over the past year, and government cybercrime teams are starting to see results from their intensified efforts. According to data from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, reported scam cases fell by nearly a third compared to last year.
From January to mid-December, authorities recorded 9,834 online scam incidents, down from 14,529 during the same period in 2024. The CICC operates under the Department of Information and Communications Technology and plays a key role in monitoring and responding to digital threats nationwide.
Aside from fewer reported cases, more suspects have been apprehended. This signals stronger coordination among government agencies working together to stop scams, assist victims, and hold offenders accountable.
One of the major drivers behind the improvement is the ScamSafe Project, which was rolled out earlier this year. The program was created to respond to scam activities that continue to evolve throughout the year. ScamSafe allows the public to report suspicious behavior, learn about common scam techniques, and understand how to stay protected online.
The platform also helps authorities act faster on reports, adding another layer of defense against fraud. Beyond digital tools, the CICC has partnered with other organizations to launch information campaigns, advisories, and print materials aimed at reaching more people, especially sectors that are more vulnerable to online scams.
Local government units are also part of the effort. LGU representatives have undergone specialized training to improve their ability to prevent cybercrime, both in their offices and within their communities.
Authorities continue to urge the public to stay alert and report scam-related activities through the CICC’s 1326 hotline and official social media channels.
