Ragnarok Origin Classic Drops Pay-to-Win, Focuses on Fair Play for PH Gamers
A new version of Ragnarok is making noise in the MMO scene, and this time, it’s not about flashy upgrades or expensive power boosts. Ragnarok Origin Classic, which launched on March 26, is taking a different path by removing almost all paid features that affect character strength.
Instead of the usual pay-to-win setup seen in many online games, the developers decided to keep things simple. The only paid feature left is a Monthly Pass, and even that comes with limits. Everything else that could give players an advantage through spending has been stripped away.
This change didn’t come out of nowhere. During early testing, players already noticed something unusual. No paid stat boosts, no VIP perks that give power advantages, and no hidden mechanics tied to spending. Even cosmetic items, which usually sneak in extra stats in other games, are purely for looks here. Everyone gets the same benefits, whether they spend money or not.
Because of this, conversations quickly spread across gaming communities in Southeast Asia and beyond. Long-time fans were excited, saying it feels like the classic Ragnarok experience is finally back. At the same time, some players were cautious, wondering if there might be hidden systems that still favor paying users.
From what was shown during testing, the team stayed consistent with their promise. Paid currency is now used only for cosmetics, and progression has been simplified. Instead of chasing numbers, players are encouraged to explore maps, clear dungeons, and work together with others.
One thing that stood out was how the developers communicated with players. The producer, known as “Big Kitty,” actively shared updates and even adjusted the game based on feedback during testing. This level of interaction helped build trust, especially in a genre where players are used to aggressive monetization.
For many, this approach feels like a big shift. MMORPGs in the region have long relied on systems that tie progress to spending, making the experience feel more like a grind than a game. Ragnarok Origin Classic tries to bring back what made the original fun, focusing on adventure, teamwork, and discovery.
The game also gives plenty of free rewards right from the start. Players can get items like Baphomet Jr., rare cards, costumes, and other useful resources without spending. There are also events designed to encourage group play and competition, including cross-region activities and a large-scale esports tournament.
What makes this interesting is that even free players have a real chance to compete. Success depends more on skill and coordination rather than how much money someone puts in.
With all these changes, Ragnarok Origin Classic is not just tweaking the usual formula. It is trying to rebuild it from the ground up, putting fairness and enjoyment at the center.
The world of Midgard is open again, and this time, players are stepping in on equal footing. Whether this becomes the new standard for MMOs in the region is something the community will decide soon enough.
