MNL48 Announces Disbandment After 8 Years

After several months of uncertainty surrounding the future of MNL48, the group’s management has officially confirmed that its activities will come to an end by May 2026.

In a statement released by P.O.S Inc. on May 20, the company shared that the decision came after long discussions about the group’s future, management setup, and overall sustainability. According to the agency, continuing operations in a stable way had become increasingly difficult.

For longtime fans, the announcement marks the end of an era that started back in 2018 when MNL48 debuted in the Philippines under Hallo-Hallo Entertainment. The idol group quickly gained attention as the local sister group of Japan’s AKB48 franchise, introducing the “idol culture” concept to Filipino audiences.

Over the years, the group experienced several major changes behind the scenes. Around a year ago, management shifted from Hallo-Hallo Entertainment to MNL48 Inc. Earlier this year, the company changed its name to P.O.S Inc., short for “Pearl of the Orient Seas.” The new name was meant to symbolize the Philippines and the agency’s hopes of helping the group shine even brighter moving forward.

There were also plans earlier this year for MNL48 itself to receive a new name and identity. However, the rebrand never pushed through, leaving many fans wondering what direction the group would eventually take.

As part of the announcement, the company also revealed that the newly released music video for Pag-ibig Fortune Cookie will serve as the group’s final project. Management described the release as a message of gratitude to supporters and a heartfelt farewell from the members themselves.

The statement also thanked fans, former members, staff, and everyone who became part of MNL48’s journey through the years. The company apologized for the sudden announcement and acknowledged that the decision would be painful for many supporters who stayed loyal to the group despite its ups and downs.

For longtime followers, the final release feels both nostalgic and emotional, especially for those who have supported the group since its early days. While MNL48’s activities may be ending, many fans will likely continue supporting the members in whatever paths they choose next.
