After the brouhaha from the Philippine Shaider remake, a new rumor about a Philippine remake of one of Japan's Super Sentai Series surfaced from Mike's blog.

ABSCBNInsider said on July 30th, 2007 at 2:39 pm,

ABS CBN 2 will possibly remake a popular sentai MASKMAN.and guess what sure roles na for Gerald Anderson as Michael Joe/RedMask, Kim Chiu as Princess Rio and villainess Igamu, maganda ang role n ggampanan ni Alfred Martinez as Commander Sugata, syempre si Niña Jose ung mganda at matangkad sa PinoyBBigbro teen ay si MaryGrace/PinkMask and mostly si Michael De Mesa bilang Emperor Zeba of Tube Empire. Mas comprehensive and visual at special effects than Rounin because of the pure on going coordination of Japan Mazda Sentai maker of Bioman etc..ano may sinabi pa Shaider GMA 7?

For those who are too young to remember, Maskman was one of the first super sentai series shown in the Philippines with matching Tagalog translated theme songs. I think it was shown in the 1989, 1990 or 1991, the same time as Shaider.

IF the remake could match or even surpass the special effects of Rounin, then I'm for the remake. I've watched Rounin and definitely the series boasts one of the best special effects ever produced in the Philippines, and of course quality actors and directors. Rounin has no cheezy love stories and settings. The atmosphere really feels that you're watching an epic story from another world and not from a studio.

Tagalog Opening Theme

Tagalong Ending Theme

But if ABS-CBN's doing the Super Twins / Darna / Encantadia / Atlantika / Asian Treasures way... then screw you and stop destroying our childhood memories.

I've just watched the Simpsons Movie a few hours ago and watching it reminded me of one of my favorite arcade games when I was in grade school --The Simpsons Arcade. I've asked Glen if he ever saw a NES or SNES version of the game, unfortunately there were none.

Fortunately for anyone who have internet access, an arcade emulator called MAME is just a few clicks away. MAME is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software, with the intent of preserving gaming history and preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The name is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

Owning and distributing MAME itself is legal in the USA (and obviously in the Philippines as well), as it is merely an emulator.

Anyway, I've found a ROM image of the original Simpsons Arcade game and gave it a try since I don't have to worry about running out of tokens. I used to play this game everytime my cousins and I went to SM North EDSA. Tokens that time cost about P2.00 - P3.00 each. Now let's start some Retro Gaming Nights :~)

The gameplay is simple. After stealing a diamond from Springfield Jewelers for his boss Mr. Burns, Smithers bumps into Homer Simpson and his family. Smithers lost the diamond and Maggie snatches it in her mouth. Smithers then grabbed Maggie and flees.

The game's levels are based on the streets of Springfield, Krustylu Studios, Moe's Tavern, Springfield Gorge, a graveyard, a dream world, the Channel 6 studio, and the Power Plant. Each level has its unique boss. Dreamland was the last level I reached when I was playing this in the arcades. Call it scarcity of tokens. HAHAHHA! :P

And there's these bonus rounds. Do you remember the screenshot above? You have to press the buttons quickly to beat your teammates to inflate a balloon. Ahh... memories :~)

Finally Mr. Burns! I never reached the end of this game in the arcades. Good thing I have unlimited supply of tokens :~)

Well it took me 16 years just to finish this game... now time to find that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game.

Here's one of the reason why Sony has not launched the PSP here. Piracy is so widespread and tolerated that my cousin has bought a PSP package from a well known mall unknowingly that it's already modified to play games directly from a memory stick. And you don't need to load any other third party apps, just load the games direct from memory. My cousin was buying his first PSP so he doesn't know a thing about it. When the saleslady told him that the package would include a lot of games, he immediately paid for it. Guess what, the games where saved in memory sticks and a DVD compilation.

You can see the PSP 3.40oc-a Custom Firmware in action in the video above. Just to clarify things, the Philippines may be a haven for pirated video games but it doesn't mean that the Philippines is the source of these. The custom firmware came from some guy in America and the games obviously came from the internet or from some compilation DVD from some Chinese or Malaysian guys. The only problem the Philippines have is the lack of laws to prevent the proliferation of pirated games.

After the large demand of Wii and Nintendo DS, Nintendo is now ranked 5th Largest Company in Japan overtaking NTT and Honda.

According to YAHOO! News:

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS) zipped passed telecoms giant NTT (9432.T) and a major financial group to become Japan's fifth-biggest company by market value on Thursday, propelled higher by a stellar earnings performance on demand for its Wii and DS game gear.

By mid-afternoon Nintendo's stock had climbed 8.1 percent to 614,000 yen, adding to a 3.5 percent gain made on Wednesday after its earnings announcement.

Nintendo lifted its annual outlook above market expectations after quarterly operating profit more than tripled, as its strategy to expand the gaming population to women and the elderly paid off handsomely.

Offering innovative and easy-to-play games, the company's DS handheld player and Wii console have outsold rival Sony Corp. (6758.T) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) machines in recent months.

Its market value now stands at 8.69 trillion yen ($72 billion), outstripping Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T), NTT or Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (9432.T), and Honda Motor Co (7267.T) which had placed higher in the rankings only a day before. It shot past Sony last month.

The Kyoto-based company revised up its operating profit forecast by 37 percent to 370 billion yen ($3.1 billion) for the year to March 2008, topping a consensus of a 305 billion yen profit in a poll of 20 analysts by Reuters Estimates.

It also lifted its annual dividend forecast to 960 yen from an earlier estimate of 700 yen.

Nintendo's DS lets users control play with a stylus instead of manipulating a keypad, while the Wii, which competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, comes with an unusual motion-sensing controller that can be swung like a bat or a sword.

The creator of such game characters as Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong raised its sales forecast for the Wii by 18 percent to 16.5 million units for the current business year, while lifting its DS sales target by 18 percent to 26 million units.

So Nintendo, can you now have a price cut with your Wii Consoles? please ^^

Having trouble with devhook lately? Can't play that latest game because your emulated firmware is just 3.11? Fret not, here is a step by step guide in achieving that psp ecstasy.

First things first. Why do we need to upgrade / downgrade your psp to 3.40E-A (Open Edition revision A)? Well here is why:

-Runs iso and cso without using devhook or any other umd emulator
-Build in P.O.P.S. (Playstation One Portable System) plays PSX (playstation 1) images instantly
-Updated software with camera and RSS support
-Compatible with the latest games 3.11 and above
-Runs homebrew applications even if your firmware is not 1.5

Get your PSP and flash it now!

Before we begin, make sure you understand the risks involve

PLEASE NOTE I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF THIS CAUSES YOUR PSP TO BRICK

You must have a PSP that is capable of reading homebrew applications (i.e. 1.5 firmware). If you haven't downgraded it to 1.5 here's a guide

Next, download the AIO 3.40OE installer which can be found here

Run the installer on your computer and it will automatically save the required files on your memory stick (I suggest formatting it first), assuming your psp is connected to your computer via usb.

go to the Game section on your psp and then access your memory card. You will now see a new program Upgrade to 3.40OE-A. Before running it, make sure your psp has a 75% and above battery life, if not, charge it first. Flashing while connected to an outlet is not recommended.

If you already prayed and accepted the fact that whatever happens I still love Siopao Master. Run the program and watch it flash your psp to 3.40OE. The whole ordeal will run in approx. 3 minutes. After the installation, restart your psp manually and enjoy the benefits of 3.4OE

Happy Gaming!
^0^

The widespread piracy of films, music and video games is forcing many international companies to have second thoughts on manufacturing software in the Philippines, a Sony Corp. executive said.

"Piracy is the big concern and this is the reason why we cant do business here," said Hiroaki Kobayashi, president and managing director of Sony Philippines.

"I think its also the problem of other companies," he said, citing the widespread availability of pirated versions of movies, audio products, video-games and computer software.

He said this was why Sony would not even import copies of video-games for their popular Playstation Portable (PSP) into the Philippines.

Kobayashi said he could not say just how much the industry lost to piracy saying: "Its very difficult to quantify."

The International Intellectual Property Alliance said the loss to US copyright industries in the Philippines in 2004 was 139 million dollars. Pirated versions of movies, music and software are widely available in many shopping malls in the Philippines despite numerous complaints from companies and foreign governments.

Kobayashi said Sony hardware, however, continues to enjoy success in the Philippines with its widescreen televisions, digital video cameras and bluetooth headphones all getting increases in sales.

He estimated sales in 2006 amounting to 4.4 billion pesos (90.2 million dollars), up from 3.5 billion pesos in 2005.

No, it wasn't Raiden's fault. Brazilian gamer Aguinaldo César Alves was struck by lightning the other day while playing Mortal Kombat in his Super Nintendo Entertainment System. He was teaching his 8-yr old cousin a move when the lightning struck him and knocked him unconscious. He's ok now and didn't sustain any major injuries. Just a burned SNES.

So next time you'll be teaching younglings some M-Rated games, prepare to be zapped by lightning :P

A recent survey from 1,500 US children and teens 10-19 years old showed that adolescent gamers spent 30 percent less time reading and 34 percent less time doing their homeworks than their non-gaming counterparts.

The study showed both groups spend a similar amounts of time with parents and friends, but homework was something else, WebMD.com reported.

"Although gamers and non-gamers did not differ in the amount of time they spent interacting with family and friends, concerns regarding gamers' neglect of school responsibilities (reading and homework) are warranted," the researchers said.

The survey also showed that the participants played video games an hour on weekdays and 90 minutes on weekend days.

I won't speak for Rocky but when we were still in school, I don't play video games. Just some TV and lots of reading, reviews and homeworks. It's just a matter of discipline and self control ;)

Looking for some nostalgic PC gaming? Then the Buffalo Famicom controller is the answer to all your video game wet dreams. It looks almost exactly like the Family Computer controllers with the added shoulder buttons and two more above the A and B buttons.

The controller is similar to the cheap ones being sold at CDR-King for P100. Features plug and play for Windows XP, Vista, 2000, and Mac. Drivers are included for Windows 98 and ME.

This controller is manufactured by Buffalo in Japan.

No it's not a Bravestarr game but an accessory for your Nintendo 64 system. The 32X like contraption will allow you to insert and play your Super NES/Super Famicom and NES/Famicom cartridges on your Nintendo 64 console. Think of is as a Super GameBoy on steroids.

The Tristar is not licensed by Nintendo.

Assassin's Creed is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and is rumored to be released this November 2007.

The game takes place during the Third Crusade, in the year 1191. The player assumes the role of Altaïr a member of the Hashshashin sect (the original "assassins"), whose objective is to slay the nine historical figures who are propagating the Crusades. As the player finds and kills these targets, their conspiracy is unveiled. The player will be able to travel through three cities: Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus.

The environment is completely interactive, from the people to the historically accurate cities. These cities are populated by many people, and the way the player controls Altaïr affects how the bystanders around him react to his presence. For example, when going through a crowd, if the player lightly moves someone out of the way, it will not have a significant effect. However, if the player throws someone to the ground and kills them, the crowd may unite against him and he will then have to find a way out. Similarly, if the player shoves a person aside, they may shove him back. If he climbs walls, civilians will gather around, attracting unwanted attention from guards.

Assassin's Creed also was the most popular cross-platform title from IGN's GameMetrics on the recently concluded E3 2007.

The owner, Sal, can't stand guys like Helmet and blames them for his, and the shop's, downfall. Sal takes the time he has on his hands waiting on his wandering wife's return (and dodging his father) to try and convince Helmet to change his ways, to talk himself into succeeding at something and to finally face up to the mess in his private life . But it's maybe too late for all that as the truth slowly comes out and they both move through the levels of the play.

HELMET Production History

It looks like the end for the world's most successful video game system, the Nintendo GameBoy. According to Nintendo's George Harrison, Nintendo might completely scrap the GameBoy trademark in favor of the widely successful Nintendo DS.

George Harrison revealed: "This year in our marketing you really won't see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark."

Back in 2005, Nintendo launched the DS as the 'third pillar' of its hardware line-up, alongside Game Boy and its home console. However, the DS's meteoric rise has apparently put the kibosh on any plans to release a Game Boy Advance 2.

However, Harrison noted that dropping the Game Boy name in favour of the untested DS brand wasn't an easy decision. "It was a big risk for us to actually pass on it and call the new product the Nintendo DS," he revealed, "but it was part of Mr. Iwata's philosophy that if we're going to make a radical difference and try to reach a new audience, then we have to change the name... we had to make a break even though we had one of the greatest trademarks in the history of the industry."

Suggestion... Why not release the next version of the NDS as the Nintendo GameBoy DS? Cool right? :~)

It's now official, after Reebok and SEGA... Peter Moore leaves Microsoft to join EA, particularly at the EA Sports division.

In the article posted at Variety.com, it stated that:

Two of the vidgame industry's biggest execs are hitting the restart button.

Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft's Xbox vidgame biz, unexpectedly ankled Tuesday to take a job at Electronic Arts as head of its lucrative EA sports business.

Replacing him is Don Mattrick, who coincidentally left EA as its head of worldwide studios in February 2006.

Mattrick takes his new post July 30, while Moore starts at EA in September.

In February, Mattrick joined Microsoft as a part-time adviser to Moore. Insiders say there's no indication that Mattrick was hired with the intention of moving him into Moore's spot. Rather, his existing connection to the company along with his long history in the vidgame biz made him a logical choice for the role.

"I had no idea Peter was considering leaving the role he was in," Mattrick told Daily Variety. "I think this is the best job in the industry, so I am a little surprised."

Moore was seemingly not pushed out given that his new job as prexy of EA Sports is one of the most important in the industry. Insiders said that he had already decided to leave before Microsoft announced two weeks ago that it is taking a $1 billion-plus writedown in the wake of the high number of defective Xbox 360s.

However, it's likely that the 360's hardware problems, as well as surprisingly strong competition from the Nintendo Wii, played a role in Moore's decision to leave for a less stressful post as head of the industry-leading sports games biz.

Job is a logical one for Moore, who marketed athletic shoes for Reebok before moving to Sega in 1999. He was tapped to head marketing for Microsoft's vidgame business in 2003 and took over the unit in 2005. Exec also said he wanted to move his family back to the San Francisco Bay Area from Redmond, Wash.

His appointment fills the last remaining top spot at EA since new CEO John Riccitiello divided the company into four divisions. He also named another well respected outsider, former Activision exec Kathy Vrabeck, to lead EA Casual Entertainment.

"Peter Moore's proven record of leadership in games and sports makes him a terrific fit for heading up EA Sports," Riccitiello said in a statement. "As a partner at Microsoft and earlier, as a competitor, we've learned to respect his vision and leadership."

Mattrick takes over as Microsoft is trying to put its hardware problems behind it and focus on a strong slate of games for the 360 this holiday season, most notably "Halo 3." It is attempting to vanquish Sony as the leading brand among hard-core gamers while also reaching out to the expanded audience of casual gamers who have, thus far, flocked primarily to Nintendo's Wii and DS.

"My first order of business is to execute on the plans already created for the holiday, and then afterward, I'll spend time with the senior leadership team to figure out ways we can hopefully accelerate our leadership position," Mattrick said of his priorities.

Beyond pure gaming, Microsoft is also trying to use its vidgame console as a digital entertainment hub. The 360 can already download TV shows and movie from numerous networks and studios. Other media capabilities are in the works.

We might see in the future, a "Reebok Wii Accessory from EA Sports game?"

Want to play a game like Guitar Hero on your Windows, Mac or Linux machines? Then download the open source game Frets on Fire. Frets on Fire is a music video game created by Nathan Hunt in which players use the keyboard to play along with scrolling on-screen musical notes to complete a song.

Frets on Fire is open-source software. The source code written for the game is written in the Python programming language and released under the GNU General Public License, though the game incorporates other open-source code under other licenses. The game's included song files and some internal fonts are proprietary, and their redistribution is not permitted.

The gameplay of Frets on Fire is the same as in Guitar Hero - the player emulates playing a guitar. Frets on Fire is meant to be played by picking up the keyboard like a guitar, with one hand pressing the fret buttons and another pressing the pick buttons. There is support for joysticks however, meaning that the Guitar Hero controllers can be used as well.

Here's a preview of how the game is played:

According to a survey conducted by Gametart in UK, girls who play video games (particularly Nintendo DS) have more sex that girls who don't.

It’s official – women who play video games have sex more often! Gametart, the UK’s largest online games rental company, carried out the survey throughout January to see how the recent influx of the likes of Pink PSPs and DS Lites would affect gamers’ sex lives across the country.

The results were surprising.

Of our sample of 200 women, those who played video games on average had sex 4.3 times a week while those who didn’t play games only had sex just 3.2 times a week.

Perhaps even more promising for gamers is the fact that many of the women that we interviewed who have only recently started playing games said that they now have sex more often than before.

Gamers have never had it so good!

Well, we all know that hot Japanese AV idol Maria Ozawa owns a pink Nintendo DS and a pink PStwo.

I wonder if other Japanese AV stars play video games... Oh, how about the 90% of the featured gamers we have here on GameOPS?

Hi Sofie :~)

Filipino fans of Shaider have the reason to jump for joy as the Philippine remake of Shaider has been scrapped. The original owners of Shaider revoked the rights for a remake after supposedly reading all the negative reactions of fans when the news of a remake was announced.

But this wouldn't stop GMA-7 from releasing a Shaider series. According to the article from Philippine Entertainment Portal, GMA-7 would be releasing a series based on Shaider and it will not be a remake of the original but more of like a sequel or side story of some sort.

Rumored title of the show surfacing the internet is Pulis Pangkalawakan (Space Police).

Ang magiging titulo nito ay Pulis Pangkalawakan (Descendants of Shaider). Tentative pa lang ito and so are the cast. May nakapagsabing Shaido raw ang magiging final title.

Nandito pa rin si Marky Cielo, but not as Shaider anymore and he won't be the only lead star. Makakasama na niya sina Dennis Trillo at Raymart Santiago.

Also in cast are Diana Zubiri; Lovi Poe; StarStruck 1‘s Dion Ignacio; StarStruck 2's LJ Reyes; Starstruck 3's Iwa Moto, Arci Muñoz, and Vaness del Moral; Starstruck 4's Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal; Ian de Leon; Paolo Ballesteros; Karel Marquez; at si Jay Manalo still playing the lead villain.

Sina LJ, Iwa, Arci, and Vaness ang gaganap na mga Amazonas.

Pulis Pangkalawakan will be directed by Dominic Zapata.

Shaido? Can't they think of another catchy name? And I thought the SEXBOMB GIRLS are the Amazona villains. Anyway, the new show will just be another rip-off from our favorite director :)

UPDATE: According from a RELIABLE source... it seems that the final title of the show would be PANGKAT PANGKALAWAKAN :~)

My favorite assassin game originated from PC-Game is now on the big screen!

Agent 47 (Olyphant) has been educated to become a professional assassin for hire. His most powerful weapons are his nerve and a resolute pride in his work. 47 is both the last two digits of the barcode tattooed on the nape of his neck, and his only name. The hunter becomes the hunted when 47 gets caught up in a political takeover. Both Interpol and the Russian military chase the HITMAN across Eastern Europe as he tries to find out who set him up and why they’re trying to take him out of the game. But the greatest threat to 47’s survival may be the stirrings of his conscience and the unfamiliar emotions aroused in him by a beautiful, damaged girl.
